Welcome to Nuremberg’s St. Johannis and St. Rochus Cemeteries

The historic cemeteries of St. Johannis (St John‘s) and St. Rochus (St Roch), owned by the Protestant church for more than 500 years, are still in use and available for burials. They are places of quiet, of hope and of consolation. For many generations, people have interred their loved ones here. These are places where they can mourn and find new hope. We bury our dead to honour their past lives, to feel our own mortality and to find direction in our lives.

Today, the cemeteries of St John’s and St Roch’s are joined in the Lutheran Cemetery Association for Nuremberg St. Johannis and St. Rochus. They are managed by the cemetery administration from its headquarters in the Steinschreiberhaus on Johannisstraße. The staff here will be able to help you with any concerns and questions you may have.

Famous Deceased

The historic lying ashlars and the standing gravestones from the 19th century as well as the unique epitaphs are special characteristics of these cemeteries which are protected ancient monuments. Many well-known people were laid to rest here. Thus the cemeteries not only tell the history of Nuremberg, but also of their times and show how the various epochs dealt with the topics of sickness and death.
